town after agricultural sector. In recent years some of the tourists arriving in
Fethiye from all over the world through the media of tour operators
have bought properties and settled here which will no doubt enhance the development
of tourism sector in the region.
Organized Tours
To get to know Fethiye and its environs in more detail and to spend
a pleasant day, you can participate in tours organized by legitimate Tourism Agency;
EXPRESS TRAVEL accompanied by professional-licensed guides
in various languages. These tours are organized with the purpose of visiting Dalyan,
Tlos, Saklikent, Üzümlü, Kaya Köyü, Ephesus, Pamukkale
(Cotton Castle - Hierapolis), Xanthos, Letoon, Patara,Kalkan, Kaþ, Kekova
and many other natural and historical sites where, in addition to transportation
and guidance, your food and beverages may also be furnished at reasonable prices.
DALYAN, CAUNOS & TURTLE BEACH
A short journey by air-conditioned bus takes you to
the fishing harbour of Dalyan to start a boat trip down the meandering Dalyan river
delta to the golden sands of Istuzu Beach. En route, you'll pass the amazing
millennia old rock tombs hewn into the sheer cliff face hundreds of feet up, and
the ruins of ancient Caunos city. A stop at the sulphurous mud baths will (they
say) 'take ten years off you' if you wallow for long enough. If that doesn't work,
perhaps an afternoon nap on 'Turtle Beach' will! Do, however, keep just one eye
open to catch a glimpse of a rare loggerhead turtle coming inland to nest.
TLOS, SAKLIKENT GORGE & YAKAPARK

Travel through picturesque rural Turkey to explore the Lycian, Byzantine and Ottoman
ruins at the ancient city of Tlos, supposed home of Pegasus the winged horse. Enjoy
a delicious lunch of grilled trout, mezes and salads in the open air of leafy Yakapark
trout farm. See the art of carpet and kilim making in action at a traditional carpet
factory (what better souvenir of a holiday in Turkey?). Then discover hidden Saklikent
Canyon, with its gushing waterfalls and icy torrents of water to freshen you up
before returning to Fethiye.
12 ISLANDS BOAT TRIP

Cruise the islands around Fethiye Bay for a totally relaxing, sun
soaked day ... explore the Byzantine and Roman ruins of Dockyard Island and Cleopatra's
Bath; swim in peaceful bays and inlets and lie back on remote island shores: a perfect
way to relax, top up your tan and see the beauty of the Turquoise Coasts.
KEKOVA & MYRA
Kekova, with its incredible beauties is one of the
best-loved anchorages of blue voyagers, where history and nature come together.
Name of Kekova is taken from the Island, which is covered with ancient ruins. The
lake like sheltered sea between the Island and the main land is also called Dead
Sea. Following shore, you can see many houses submerged in the water as the result
of various earthquakes, which gives another name to the area - "sunken city". On
the mainland, many of good samples of Lycian sarcophagi can be
seen among the olive and carob trees.
The ruins of Myra are situated 5 km from the shore. On reaching the city,
the first thing you see is the acropolis on top of the hill, which is literally
covered with Lycian rock tombs. Most of pigeon hole type tombs
(called simple niches) and house type tombs are damaged, but some inscriptions and
reliefs are still visible. Nearby the tombs, the theatre - The cavea of which
is half Greek and half Roman in style - is situated near the necropolis, and is
in better condition than the other theatres in Lycia.
St. Nicolas
was born in Patara and lived in Myra. In the 4th
century he was the Bishop of Myra until the end of his life, and was buried in his
church. The church of St. Nicholas in Kale (Myra) was collapsed in an earthquake
in 529; a larger church was built in its place. The Church of St Nicholas was razed
to the ground during a naval assault conducted by the Arabs in 1034. An inscription
reads that it was restored under Constantine IX in 1043. Some additions were made
during renovations in the 12th century, and the church was finally renovated in
its present position during the 19th century and again after Atatürk
leaving an excellent example of Anatolian - Byzantine architecture. In the 11th
century Italian pirates broke open the sarcophagus of St. Nicholas and took his
bones to Bari, in Italy. St. Nicholas's Roman style decorated sarcophagus still
stands in the church.
ALTERNATIVE TOURISM
Besides popular mass tourism, Fethiye has excellent conditions
for alternative tourism as well. There is a growing interest in the Lycian
history and archaeology, natural sites, sports and hobbies, resulting in new fields
of activities. Within the scope of a project undertaken by the Governorship of Muðla,
it has been established that Eren Daðý near Fethiye has most favourable
facilities for winter tourism. It will be no surprise if Fethiye,
which is renowned all over the world as a destination for summer tourism will, in
the near future, also be recognized as a “skiing centre”.

is deemed as one of the best flying points in the world for paragliding. Babadað
